Two to four knaves want to follow in the footsteps of the great Richard Ritterschlag. They want to defeat dragons, catch robbers, chase away witches and have many more adventures. Before that, however, they have to explore the area around the castle: “Richard Ritterschlag” is a tile-laying game, where a middle ages landscape is created round by round. Many of the triangu lar landscape tiles show half of a colour-coordinated quest field. Whoever completes it may play a corresponding adventure card from their supply. At the jousting arena, the colour isn’t im portant and whoever helps the scatterbrained Knight No-hoper to find his horse gets an extra turn. Knight or knave? – tactical play and lucky cards will decide.

It’s amazing how many adventures fit into this compact box. The author Johannes Zirm uses a minimum of components and rules to create the stuff that great heroic stories are made of. Little by little, an atmospheric and tongue-in-cheek world of knights unfurls, that players want to return to again and again, either on their own or in a group. Afterwards they’ll be ready for bigger missions – and at the gaming table too.
